Keep Flowers Fresh Longer
Flowers add beauty and freshness to any space, but their charm can quickly fade if not properly cared for.
To extend the life of your floral arrangements and enjoy their vibrant beauty for as long as possible, follow these proven methods for keeping flowers fresh longer.

1. Trim the Stems Regularly

Before placing flowers in a vase, trim the stems at an angle about 1-2 inches from the bottom. This allows for better water absorption. It’s also essential to re-trim the stems every few days. Cutting the stems under water prevents air bubbles from forming, which can block water uptake.

2. Use Clean Vases and Tools

Always use a clean vase and cutting tools. Bacteria in dirty water or on unclean tools can cause the flowers to deteriorate faster. Wash the vase with soap and water, and sterilize the scissors or tool with rubbing alcohol before use.

3. Add Flower Food

It typically includes sugar for nourishment, acid to lower the pH, and a biocide to prevent bacterial growth. Follow the instructions on the packet and change the water and flower food mixture every few days.

4. Change the Water Regularly

Replace the water in the vase every 2-3 days to keep it clean and free from bacteria. When changing the water, rinse the stems and remove any leaves that are submerged to prevent them from decaying.

5. Keep Flowers Cool

Flowers last longer in a cool environment. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight, near fruit, or in hot areas like near a radiator. A cooler room temperature helps slow down the aging process of the flowers.

6. Avoid Ethylene Gas

Fruit and vegetables produce ethylene gas, which can accelerate the wilting of flowers. Keep your flowers away from fruit bowls and other ethylene-producing items to maintain their freshness.

7. Use Ice Cubes

For certain types of flowers, such as roses, adding a few ice cubes to the vase water can help maintain a cooler temperature and extend their life. The gradual melting of ice cubes helps keep the water cool and fresh.

8. Add a Penny or Aspirin

A common household trick involves adding a copper penny or an aspirin tablet to the vase water. The copper in the penny or the salicylic acid in aspirin can act as a mild bactericide, helping to keep the water clean.
