More Than You Think
Frisbees are used for both recreational and competitive purposes. There are different games that involve a court, field, and even an entire course! You and your dog can even join in on the frisbee fun and enter different competitions.
You probably think of frisbees as just something you toss around on the beach or for a game of fetch. However, there are more uses than you may think!Outside of enjoying a game of toss with some friends, there are several organized sports and games that use frisbees.
1.Ultimate Frisbee
Ultimate Frisbee is the most popular disc sport, combining football and basketball. The object is to score points by tossing the disc to a team member in the opposition’s end zone. The person with the disc cannot run with it, similar to basketball.
Seven players are allowed on the playing field for each team, with substitutes on the sidelines. Games are played up to 17 points or 100 minutes, whichever comes first.
2.Double Disc Court
Double Disc Court, or DDC, is played with two teams of two players and requires two frisbees. Each team has their own court across from the other, and the goal is to defend your court against the opposing team.
An attack on your opponent’s court can be made by landing your frisbee in their court without being touched, or by making an opponent touch both discs at the same time.
Whenever a successful attack is made, or the other team throws out of bounds, a point is awarded.
If you want to get good grades in Frisbee, you need to have these abilities in addition to your professional knowledge.
1.Mental Processing Speed + Capacity
Mental processing speed is the ability to make actionable decisions based on the information you gather from reading the field.At first, your mental processing capacity will be taken up with simple tasks.
Once those tasks become second nature you free up more room to start to free up more capacity to analyze other pieces of information.
Is the player with the disc a good thrower? The disc just got dumped backwards, what does that mean for the player guarding who is too far downfield?
As you get more game reps, more of these questions become instincts, and you can keep increasing your mental processing capacity.
Eventually you can start to look for opportunities to read not only your matchup but other matchups, and help out.
2.Endurance
Endurance in Frisbee cannot be understated. Our sport requires long runs, cuts, sprints, jumps and other cardio taxing movement.
Not only will an increase in cardio and endurance help us be better athletes on the field, but lack of endurance, will affect every skill on this list.
When you’re tired, heart beating, gasping for air your throwing is going to suffer. It’s harder to catch a disc and you are so focused on breathing that you cannot read the field.
Having sufficient endurance allows you to execute the multitude of skills and processes that Frisbee demands at 100%.
We’ve all thrown discs away when we were tired, so if we build up our endurance we limit the amount of touches we have while exhausted.
Despite the fact that Frisbee is supposed to be a “non-contact” team sport, many serious accidents can still occur.
Common injuries in Frisbee are ankle and knee sprains and these occur from collisions when a player is on offense trying to avoid other players and makes sharp-angled cuts to get space between them and their defender.
Blame it on gravity, momentum or even clumsiness, but it is always important to remember that prevention is better than cure. A game of Frisbee should be about having fun and enjoyment, not injuries.
