Fuji & Kawaguchi
As avid travelers, we recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi, two of Japan's most iconic destinations. From breathtaking natural scenery to delightful local cuisine, our trip was a tapestry of unforgettable experiences.
Dear Lykkers! Let us share with you the highlights of our adventure and a few insider tips for your own visit!
The Majestic Mount Fuji
Our journey began with a visit to Mount Fuji, Japan’s most famous peak and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Standing at 3,776 meters, Mount Fuji is an awe-inspiring sight, and we were eager to explore its surroundings. We decided to start with a hike along the Fuji Five Lakes, which provide stunning views of the mountain. Each lake offers a unique perspective of Fuji, but the clear, crisp air and the towering silhouette of the mountain are consistent across all.
For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station provides a starting point for a more accessible view. The 5th Station can be reached via a toll road, which costs approximately ¥2,000 for a one-way trip. From here, we were treated to panoramic vistas and the opportunity to take some memorable photos. The visitor center at the 5th Station offered helpful insights and a chance to purchase souvenirs.
Serenity at Lake Kawaguchi
Just a short drive from Mount Fuji lies Lake Kawaguchi, a serene escape nestled at the base of the mountain. We spent a lovely afternoon strolling along the lakeshore, where the reflection of Mount Fuji on the calm waters created a mesmerizing view. Renting a rowboat for a peaceful paddle on the lake was a highlight of our visit, and the rental cost was about ¥1,000 per hour.
We also discovered the Kawaguchi Art Gallery, which features a range of local artworks and provides a charming cultural touch to the area. The gallery’s entry fee was ¥300, which was well worth it for the intimate and delightful art experience. The gallery’s quaint café served delicious matcha lattes, which perfectly complemented our artistic exploration.
A Stay to Remember: Hotel Green Plaza
When it comes to accommodation, Hotel Green Plaza offers an exceptional experience. Located on the northern shore of Lake Kawaguchi, this hotel provides breathtaking views of Mount Fuji from many of its rooms. The traditional Japanese architecture, combined with modern amenities, creates a cozy and authentic atmosphere.
The hotel’s highlight is its onsen (hot spring bath), which we thoroughly enjoyed after a day of hiking. The price for a standard room starts at around ¥20,000 per night, including breakfast. For a bit of luxury, we splurged on a room with a private onsen, which cost approximately ¥35,000 per night. It was worth every yen for the incredible views and relaxation.
Savory Local Delights
Exploring local cuisine was one of our favorite parts of the trip. We dined at several charming eateries around Lake Kawaguchi, and each meal was a culinary delight. One standout was the local specialty, Hōba miso, a type of grilled miso served on a magnolia leaf. We had this dish at a local restaurant called Kawaguchiko Oden, where it was served with a side of rice and vegetables for about ¥1,200.
Another must-try is the Fujisan Curry, which we enjoyed at a quaint café named Fuji Café. The curry, rich with local spices and flavors, was served with a side of crispy tempura and a salad for ¥1,500.
For dessert, we couldn’t resist the fresh fruit parfaits, especially those featuring local strawberries, which were both delicious and visually stunning. These sweet treats were priced around ¥800, making them an affordable indulgence.
Our trip to Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi was a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. The natural beauty, combined with the warm hospitality and delightful food, made our journey truly special.
We hope our experiences inspire you to explore these iconic destinations and create your own unforgettable memories. Until our next adventure, happy travels!
