Porto Unveiled: Secrets
Have you ever found yourself lost in the winding streets of Porto, where every corner reveals a new adventure?
We did, and the journey was unforgettable. From its vibrant history to its contemporary charm, Porto has something for everyone.
Our first stop was the iconic Livraria Lello, often considered one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. We arrived early to avoid the crowds and paid the 5€ entrance fee, which is deductible if you buy a book. The neo-Gothic architecture, with its intricate wooden staircase and stained glass, felt like stepping into a fantasy novel.
Next, we ventured to the historic Ribeira District, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wandering along the Douro River, we were enchanted by the colorful facades of the buildings and the lively atmosphere of the riverside cafes. The best time to visit is late afternoon when the sun casts a golden hue over the city, perfect for photos.
We then took a tour of the famous Port Drinks Cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river. For 15€, we enjoyed a guided tour followed by a tasting of their rich, velvety Port drinks. It was fascinating to delve into the history and craftsmanship behind each bottle.
For a panoramic view of Porto, we climbed the Torre dos Clérigos. The 6€ ticket grants access to the top of this 18th-century bell tower, offering stunning views of the city’s skyline and the Douro River. The climb was well worth the effort, providing the ultimate perspective of Porto’s charm.
When it came to dining, we couldn't miss the Francesinha, a local sandwich layered with steak, and cheese, smothered in a rich tomato and drinks sauce. Café Santiago, a local favorite, served up this delicious treat for about 12€, and it did not disappoint.
After a day of exploration, we stayed at the Hotel Dom Henrique Downtown, a sleek and modern option just a short walk from the city center. The rates start around 90€ per night, offering a comfortable retreat with great views of the city. The hotel’s proximity to major attractions made it incredibly convenient, allowing us to rest and rejuvenate before our next adventure.
Lykkers, Porto’s charm is undeniable, from its historic sites and architectural marvels to its culinary delights and scenic vistas. Whether you’re exploring the hidden gems of the Ribeira District or savoring the rich flavors of Port drinks, Porto offers an experience that captivates and delights. We left with hearts full of memories and a longing to return.
