Meghan’s Hidden Talent
Hello, Lykkers! Meghan Markle has once again impressed the world, this time by showcasing her fluent Spanish in a recent Netflix series, Heart of Invictus.
The five-episode show, which premiered on December 10, provides a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of professional polo players as they gear up for the 2024 U.S. Open Polo Championship in Wellington, Florida.
Produced by Meghan and Prince Harry through their production company, Archewell Productions, the series features a special appearance by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the April 2024 Royal Salute Polo Challenge, a charity event benefiting Harry’s Sentebale organization.
In one of the standout moments, Meghan and Harry meet renowned Argentinian polo player Adolfo Cambiaso on the field. Meghan greets Cambiaso in Spanish, leaving Harry to proudly comment, "She’s fluent in Spanish." The pair then engage in a lively conversation in the language, much to the admiration of those present.
During their exchange, Meghan shares a bit about her time in Argentina, where she lived for about a year. She reminisces about her experiences in the Palermo Viejo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, adding, “Las Cañitas, too,” referring to another area she lived in. Cambiaso responds, “That’s great, that’s where the polo fields were,” acknowledging the connection to the sport.
Meghan also mentions Argentina's national holiday, Día de la Revolución de Mayo, saying, “I-love the 25th of May,” as the day celebrates the first independent government established in Buenos Aires.
This moment of linguistic fluency caught the attention of viewers, as Meghan’s Spanish skills have not been widely publicized before. The Duchess first developed her language abilities during her time as an intern at the U.S. Embassy in Buenos Aires in the early 2000s. She later refined her Spanish while studying abroad in Madrid, Spain.
Though this is one of the more public instances of Meghan speaking Spanish, she has made other notable appearances using the language. For example, during a trip to Colombia this past August, Meghan delivered opening remarks in Spanish at a summit for Afro-Colombian women. She expressed her admiration for the country and its culture, saying, “Because we are in your country, my-husband and I-can feel this embrace from Colombia—it’s incredible.” Her heartfelt words resonated with attendees, showcasing her fluency and connection to the community.
Meghan’s ability to speak Spanish fluently is a testament to her dedication to learning and embracing new cultures. From her time in Argentina and Spain to her heartfelt speeches in Colombia, the Duchess continues to demonstrate her linguistic talents and her commitment to fostering meaningful global connections.
