Rustic And Delicious
Shepherd's pie, also known as cottage pie, is a traditional British dish.
Known as cottage pie in 1791, potatoes were used as food for the poor, and the cottage was the home of poor farmers until 1854 when it became known as shepherd's pie.
According to early cookery books, the pie was first used to dispose of leftovers, cooked from a variety of foods left over from the home, and was truly a poor man's food.
The main ingredients are ground meat cooked in gravy or onion sauce and some mashed potatoes.
Sometimes other vegetables are added, such as peas, sweet corn, dry celery, or carrots.
It is also sometimes served with grated cheese.
It does not have a pastry crust like the pies in pastry, but is a flourless pie made with potatoes, meat and vegetables and is served as a main dish.
The shepherd's pie is aromatic, and a few potatoes and the right amount of lamb and vegetables will fill you up beautifully.
Such an unsurprising dish has become, over the years, a down-to-earth, everyday dish that is deeply rooted in the British psyche.
