Pineapple
Pineapples, one of the most well-known tropical fruits, are originally from Brazil and are renowned for their sweet, slightly sour taste.
These fruits are rich in various nutrients including carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins (A, B1, B2, and C), proteolytic enzymes, calcium, phosphorus, iron, organic acids, and niacin, amongst others, with Vitamin C being one of the most abundant.
One of the most interesting aspects of pineapples is their bromelain content. Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme that causes a tingling or numbing sensation in the mouth and tongue when consumed directly.
This is due to its potential to irritate the oral mucosa and the delicate skin of the lips. In some cases, the consumption of pineapple can cause localized tongue numbness, diarrhea, vomiting, and itchy skin - all of which are signs of pineapple allergy.
To avoid these symptoms, it is recommended to soak the pineapple in salt water or to remove the parts that are furthest from the stem and core (where bromelain is highly concentrated) before consuming it.
Gargling with salt water can also help to relieve the numbness caused by bromelain stimulation on the tongue. Drinking milk can also provide relief, as the milk protein interacts with the bromelain in pineapple to reduce the irritation.
Apart from its unique taste, pineapples offer several health benefits, including the following:
1. Clearing heat and combating summer heat: Pineapple contains high water content, and its sweet and sour taste makes it a great fruit for clearing heat during summer.
2. Increasing appetite: Pineapples have the effect of strengthening the stomach and aiding digestion. The alluring scent of pineapple comes from its compound butyl acid, which stimulates saliva production and increases appetite.
3. Diuretic and swelling reduction: Pineapple's high water content, along with its high potassium, calcium, and sugar content, make it an effective diuretic that helps with detoxification. This makes it an ideal fruit for people with hypertension, nephritis edema, and cough phlegm.
4. Lowering blood pressure and fat: Pineapple's enzymes help to improve blood circulation and lower blood pressure and thin blood fats, making it a great fruit for preventing fat deposition.
5. Teeth: Bromelain also effectively removes dirt from the surface of teeth, resulting in a brighter, whiter smile.
6. Beauty and skincare: Pineapple contains 30 milligrams of Vitamin C per 100 grams of pulp, making it an excellent antioxidant that helps to inhibit melanin formation.
This, in turn, makes it an effective lightening agent for age spots and reducing the incidence of dark spots. The B vitamins in pineapples also help to nourish the skin and prevent dryness.
7. Weight loss and fitness: Pineapple contains high amounts of plant fiber, making it effective in reducing the absorption of fat and promoting gastrointestinal peristalsis, which can help to prevent constipation.
Pineapples are not only delicious but also offer a range of health benefits, making them a great addition to any diet.
