Proud Animal
Giraffes have large, attractive eyes, long limbs, and a long neck. The unique shape makes it so different, they are the noble princesses of the animal kingdom. There are many species of giraffes, the most famous of which are the Angora subspecies and the Kordofan subspecies.
They are found throughout the tropics, mainly in Africa. The giraffe is a ruminant animal and the tallest terrestrial animal in the world.
Their main habitat is the African savannah, where they feed on high leaves and twigs, which takes advantage of their long necks. In the wild, the lifespan of a giraffe is about 27 years, and in captivity it can reach nearly 30 years.
Giraffes have very few food types. They mainly like to eat various leaves, especially the leaves of the genus Mimosa. A giraffe can consume 63 kg of leaves and twigs per day. Giraffes are thirst-tolerant and can go without water for a year if the leaves are hydrated.
In addition, cute-looking giraffes also have many special living habits.
1. Life
They are social animals, sometimes mixed with zebras, ostriches, and antelopes, and are often active during the day.
They have a keen sense of smell and hearing, are alert and timid, and usually walk leisurely, but they can run quickly at speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour.
2. Food
They forage in the morning and evening. In the wild, they mainly eat various leaves. A giraffe can consume 63 kg of leaves and twigs per day.
3. Fight
You must have never thought that such a cute and noble animal is actually very warlike. Male giraffes are more "bellicose" and often use their necks as weapons in battle. This behavior is called "neck punching".
This behavior is used to establish dominance, and bucks who win the neck strike have greater reproductive success.
4. Sleep
Giraffes sleep very little, usually only two hours a night. Giraffes sleep standing up most of the time, usually standing and in a fake sleep state. Because of their long necks, giraffes often sleep with their heads resting on branches to avoid neck fatigue.
5. Sound
The vocal cords of giraffes are very special. There is a shallow groove in the middle of its vocal cords, which is not very good for vocalization. Moreover, it needs the help of the lungs, thoracic cavity and diaphragm muscles to make sounds, but because the giraffe's neck is too long and the distance between these organs is too far, it is very laborious to cry. Therefore, they usually seldom call.
Such a cute big guy, are you very curious, then go to the zoo to watch them, but be careful not to feed them casually!
