When we are frightened, we often have to take a backward breath. It is, in fact, the habit of inhaling a large breath, saved in the chest, to cope with possible dangerous changes.
And in the water, we have to compulsorily inhale and exhale through the mouth. A special point to note, when we are frightened underwater, if we habitually breathe backwards, the result is bound to be choking!
The correct approach you should take is to try to exhale outward, drain the remaining water in the first level tube, keep the lumen in the breathing tube open, and then start breathing normally again.
